New Zealand, I can tell you, is really a trip of a lifetime. Manon and I have now completed two tours to this far off place and can say that we have loved every minute of both trips. But, why New Zealand and not South America for example, or both if you dare to dream?
First of all, the Country is pretty much everything you've ever heard about the place and then some; especially when it comes to the hospitality. As well, we have about a 45% advantage on the exchange rate and you can add another 15% to that when you consider the GST and other taxes are included in the prices of things. Very civilized and above board. Of course, you can converse and joke about everyone's English accents as well.
Again this year, we plan to continue our exploration of the "Ski Club Fields" in the first week and then spend the second week with PJ O'Heany's Yes Ski Improvement Program at Treble Cone Ski Field near Wanaka.
The Club Fields are something unique in that they are quite remote with old, or, really old lift technology and, where a big crowd is still only 250 skiers or so. Of course snow is always the bottom line when it comes to choosing where to go and for that reason alone, the itinerary is wide open and the choice of ski field is made as late as the day before. However the targets are: Broken River, Mt. Olympus, Craigieburn and Lake Ohau.
Here I am cutting it up at Lake Ohau and we plan to get back there for sure but we're looking forward to getting to some of the other ski fields as well.
This year, we plan to fly in to Christchurch [CRH] then hire a "Campa" and beetle off from there. We've found that the campervan option is not only practical but there is lots of space in them for gear even if you don't use them for camping. However, we've been very pleased with the camp site facilities and hookups and the Campervan Company has a special that includes one day free of skiing at Treble Cone for every day you rent the unit which makes it a no-brainer when you add this bonus into the deal.
Week One will cost between $100 and $150 Cdn per day per person based on two people sharing. This would include your "Campa" and over night in the ski field chalets, lift tickets and most of your food.
Week Two will cost you between $300 and $400 Cdn per day per person again based on two people sharing. The increased cost is premier hotel and meal related as you will pamper yourself that week at either the Edgewater Lodge or the Minaret Lodge with your hosts Gary and Fran. Either properties will please you to excess and make your stay down under so special, you'll want to stay or, at least look forward to coming back. You will also have ski improvement sessions all week on Treble Cone, transfers up and down, apres ski parties and all included in the excellent Yes Program.
Final costs are still a work in progress and are TBA, but the 2 weeks in New Zealand should come in around $3,000 Cdn and the airfare will be about $1,600.
