Dr. Ryan Oughtred’s Functional Skier Assessment [Functional Movement Screen]
A Functional Skier Assessment will make it's debut with the introduction of the SST Tech Camps this December but you don't need to wait for or even attend a camp to have yourself assessed for "skier functionality," just read through the benefits of doing it, and book your appointment at any time especially before you start your ski specific training this Fall. We're not getting any younger, but, we're getting smarter! The Functional Skier Assessment is a physical evaluation of ski specific muscle memory movement patterns for skiers, developed by Naturopathic Physician and X-National Alpine Ski Team member, Dr. Ryan Oughtred. The assessment targets the key movement patterns relevant to skiing and offers you simple tools that you can use to improve your identified weaknesses.
Dr. Oughtred has always been interested in understanding why people ski the way they do, and why they have the bad habits that they do. By systematically analyzing more than 50 skiers, he was able to show that certain weaknesses or imbalances are associated with poor skiing styles. For example:
Weakness - Bad Habit
Lateral oblique weakness - Poor Angulation/ Separation
Multiple hip weaknesses - Poor Balance
Hip inflexibilities - Poor Stance
Moreover, the best athletes in the world have the following strengths in common: they all have strong lower abdominals, squat well, and they jump [and land] properly. Understanding and improving these areas could be the missing link in your ski performance.
The Assessment Process
15 minutes
- Posture, Movement, Flexibility and Strength Assessment.
30 minutes
- Explanation of your weaknesses and how they relate to your skiing.
- Overview of a starter plan to improve those weaknesses.
- Demonstration of exercises, complete with email explanations and/ or handouts so that you don’t forget how to do them on your own.
The Assessment Result
The main goal of this assessment is to help you ski better, but you should be warned of these potential side effects:
- Better overall fitness
- Lower chance of injury
- Fewer aches and pains
- You may start skiing longer days, which could cut into your après time.
