SST Europe 2012 Ski Tour

IMG_3759

This picture was taken in late January 2010 with a rather famous mountain as the back drop; is it your turn to get in the photo?

This is your chance everyone.  The Senior Ski Team is researching the possibilities of revisiting the Alps next January.

Built on the success and considerable synergies of last years tour, we are sketching together a tour that we feel would appeal to the senior skier in particular.  PJ O'Heany of YES Ski Improvement is my source and inspiration to make this possible for those among us who have always dreamed of a ski visit to arguably the homeland of skiing, the North and Southern Tyrol region of the Alps.

We will plan to arrive in Munich Germany on Friday, January 13, 2012 for our departure by bus to the fabled town of St Anton, Austria, nestled in the famous Austrian Tyrol.

"Trip Adviser" says the hotel rooms where we plan to stay are lovely, the meals are excellent and the staff, outstanding.  We are situated in the heart of the town and minutes from the gondolas and lifts.  Do I need to tell you how big the Tyrol region is, just how many miles of trails there are to discover?  They say they have 280 kilometers of groomed pistes and 180 kilometers of off piste trails and a "network" of railway, trams and lifts to get us around a region that includes a number of interlinked sister communities.  Put it this way, I'm pretty sure we won't cross our tracks very often in the 6 ski days we'll have to explore it all.

Eventually though, we'll take a day off from our skiing to take the scenic bus ride south to the Southern Tyrol,  to the World Heritage region known as the Dolomite's and the town of Arabba, Italy.

The little town of Arabba is situated in the middle of an enormous skiing domain that has over 1100 kilometers of groomed trails and more than 450 lifts on the Super Pass.  I can't tell you how many schnapps bars you'll ski past in the week but I'm sure you'll lose count, but you'll remember the one's you stop at!

The hotel where we will stay looks like something out of a story book but the food for dinner and breakfasts alone is worth the price of admission and will make you so spoiled you'll not want to leave after 7 nights and 6 days of skiing.

After 12 days on the slopes, it will be time to transfer back to Munich on Jan 28th for our flight home on January 29th.

The YES Tour is almost sold out as it was so popular in 2010, most of the usual suspects can't wait to get back for more fun in the schnee.  The idea is to run the SST Tour along side the YES Tour.  At the moment, PJ expects that he will have 4 or 5 mini groups of 6 to 7 people each and each will have their own guide/instructor and we hope to have 3 to 4 mini groups of 6 to 7 people with our own guides and coach, including your truly.

Of course, we will also have local guides to lead us over the bigger picture and the presence of our own coaches will make the whole experience come together like regular days of SST skiing.  This format has proven to be the heart and soul of the YES Tour experience and we plan on making it a standard part of the SST Tour experience as well.

Do you need to be a good skier to join the tour?  Because we plan on going with at least 3 to 4 groups, we should be able to divide up enough to form groups of comparable skiing abilities from leisurely to more adventurous.  However, if you're in the middle of the Senior Ski Team levels or above, you'll be just fine.  You need to be able to ski for 2 weeks in a row with only one day off. You can always take a day off as well during the week but last year we went for 3 weeks and no one ever took a day off; pretty impressive.  You can expect that, for many of the days, we will all ski in the general vicinity of each other for the most part and all have lunch together most days.

You don't need to be a member of the Senior Ski Team to join the SST Europe Tour so this means that if you have friends that would like to join you, and us, they will be more than welcome.

I imagine that the majority of people will be SST members though so the age group will mostly be north of 55+.

We have a ball park price figured out based on the YES Tour which is going for 3 weeks and spending 5 nights in 4 resorts in 4 countries; Italy, Austria, Switzerland and France.

Our SST Tour is pared back to be more laid back going for 16 days and spending 7 nights in two countries, Austria and Italy and, flying in and out of a third, Germany.  The longest commute will only be between 3 and 4 hours traveling time.
