BOOKS
TO READ & DVD's TO VIEW
There
is no shortage of reading
material and DVD's on skiing out there for you to delve into in order to
improve your skiing and conditioning. Here is a growing list of my
favorites and a link to the Whistler Public Library web site where you
might be able to get a copy to read or a DVD to view; if you are
interested.
This is a book for anyone over 50 who wants some hints on how to feel like you are still 50 for years to come. Chris co writes this book with Dr Henry Lodge, Chris' doctor who provides the science behind the ideas. There is also a version written specifically for women.
A
manual for understanding the anatomical and emotional components of
posture in order to heal chronic pain. Contains self-help exercises and
ergonomics information to help correct unhealthy movement patterns;
teaches how to adopt suitable posture in the modern sedentary world.
Author Bond approaches postural changes from the inside out, explaining
that healthy posture comes from a new sense we can learn to feel, not
by training our muscles into an ideal shape. She shows how habitual
movement patterns and emotional factors lead to unhealthy posture. She
contends that posture is the physical action we take to orient
ourselves in relation to situations, emotions, and people; in order to
improve our posture, we need to examine both our physical postural
traits and the self-expression that underlies the way we sit, stand,
and move.--From publisher description.
Although the preamble to this book alludes to dealing with pain, it is an excellent reference for anyone wanting to become more knowledgeable about their muscle, skeletal, nervous and mental systems. Specific to skiing, one can juxtapose the word "posture for stance" and, with the authors brilliant insights and illustrations, know how to improve your posture/stance. Become more stance conscious and become more comfortable and confident in training yourself to be the skier you always wanted to be.
Ol' Harald has written at least 4 books on ski improvement and this one, The Essentials of Skiing, is, in my opinion, the one to really help the average "slightly older guy or gal" to get it. You can't help but improve your stance and balance by applying Harold's principles to your skiing. His illustrations are marvelous and his insights are easily the most user friendly I've ever come across. Get this book and DVD, read and play them from front to back, again and again. You won't regret it.
If you read 'The Essentials of Skiing" and need more of a technical description with an emphasis on skiing the powder, bumps, then this slightly older book by Harald Harb is for you. He released it in 2001, just after the shaped skis came to the ski scene so it is still very relevant to how we ski today.
This is a revised edition of Ron's 1999 book entitled The Skiers Edge. In my opinion, the information in the original book was in need of an update and overhaul in order to make it relevant to the skiing of today. He has accomplished his goal with this effort but be forewarned that this book is quite technical and not for the faint of heart. He brings up many interesting points on equipment and especially the physics of skiing and how it affects the skier. This is a good book for the technical junkies amongst us.
While the DVD
included with the Essentials book presents an
overview of
the "essentials," the DVD library presents many more
exercises to
help you learn and integrate these essentials in your
skiing. Each
DVD in the library focuses on an essential component, with
exercises
from
the book, as well as others not included in the book.
Available
only through Harb Ski Systems.
The DVD Library is 3
component DVD's: 1. Tipping, 2. The Complete Upper Body and 3. Flexing
& Fore/Aft Balancing. As we say in ski teaching circles, the video
doesn't lie. Many writers illustrate and explain well but few authors
can go in front of the camera and demonstrate what they have verbalized
on paper.
Harald's newest DVD got it's genesis from the skiers that have done clinics with him, his skiers. In his words, they wanted to see a series of free skiing runs to gain a strong sense of what good skiing should look like. So, Harald & Diana created this one hour of skiing in various snow conditions on a variety of different slopes. The emphasis is on free skiing and capturing its essence so don't expect the illustrations and graphic effects you encounter in "The Essentials of Skiing." He does however, add plenty of comments and suggestions to help the most avid of skier garner a greater appreciation of skiing.
Available to borrow at the Whistler Public Library or for purchase directly from Harald by clicking on the title above.
The Talent Code argues that talent isn't born, it's grown. Skills are acquired and there are hotbeds where talent not only flourishes but does so exponentially when certain practices are adhered to and followed. It's all about making circuits connect from our brain to the muscles involved in making any desired activity happen. To accomplish this, our brain produces a microscopic substance called myelin an insulator that wraps itself around a circuit of nerve fibers; the more wraps the stronger, faster and more fluent our movements and thoughts become.
It argues that effortless performance is not as desirable as struggle and obstacles are far more useful than several hundred observations. In fact, struggle may not be an option, rather, actually a biological requirement. A great read for student and coaches alike.
